Nobody by that name lives here, says the bald little man at the door, and he is lying: he is Costache Giurgiuveanu, the miser who is guardian to the orphan Felix Sima, and the house on Strada Antim behind him is about to become the boy's whole world. Inside waits Otilia, Costache's stepdaughter, barely older than Felix and impossible to pin down, who throws herself at the piano, laughs at everything, and treats him with a tenderness he cannot read.

The street was empty and dark and, despite the summer, after widespread rains, cool and rustling like a forest.
