Their servant of many years died, and going through her room the Goncourt brothers found the other life: lovers, stolen money, debts at every shop in the street, a woman they had thought they knew entirely and had never once met. Out of that came Germinie, maid to an old spinster who dozes upstairs in her chair while below, night after night, her devoted girl bleeds herself white for the creamery-keeper's son, who takes it all and wants none of her.
