At Marathon the burial mound of the Athenian dead was still standing when Pausanias walked out to see it, and the people there told him that every night you can hear horses neighing and men fighting. He wrote it down, as he wrote down everything: the temples, the roadside graves, the blackened wooden idols older than sculpture, the paintings in the Painted Stoa at Athens and in the hall at Delphi where Polygnotus had covered the walls with the sack of Troy and the country of the dead.
