At Olympia he stands in front of the Zeus of Phidias, gold and ivory, so huge the god fills the temple to its roof, and he tells you what is carved on the throne, panel by panel. That is Pausanias all over: a traveller in Roman Greece who walked the whole Peloponnese, Corinth and Argos and Sparta, Messenia still carrying it's bitter memory of conquest, the strange old hill country of Arcadia, and wrote down what was actually there.
The sandals of the god are of gold, and so is his robe.
