A king unites a broken country and builds a fellowship of knights sworn to an impossible standard. Betrayal and rivalry corrode it from inside until he is carried off wounded across the water and his whole world dissolves behind him.

The old order changeth, yielding place to new, / And God fulfils himself in many ways, / Lest one good custom should corrupt the world.
