"Fall in love, dark-browed girls, but not with Muscovites." The poem opens by singing a warning straight at its readers, then tells of the girl who did not heed it. Kateryna gives herself to a Russian soldier who marches off on campaign swearing he will come back; she is left with his child, the village laughing at her, and her own weeping parents sending her from their house.
O lovely maidens, fall in love, / But not with Muscovites, / For Muscovites are foreign folk, / They do not treat you right.
