On Fourteenth Street a young woman walks the pavement, trying to sell herself to strangers, because a revolver costs money and Alexander Berkman means to kill Henry Clay Frick for the strikers shot at Homestead. An old gentleman buys her a drink instead, tells her kindly that she has no talent for the work, and presses ten dollars into her hand.

I was nevertheless shadowed by the police and pilloried by the press as if I were the one who had killed the unfortunate woman.
