The Finnish title is Hurskas kurjuus, pious misery, and it belongs to a man nobody thought to write a novel about. Juha Toivola is born on a farm that slips from his family's hands, grows up slow and biddable, hires himself out, marries, raises children in hunger, and settles as a crofter on another man's land, a life spent bending to whatever the seasons and the gentry ask of him.
Jussi—or Juha or Janne—Toivola—according to the church register Johan Abraham Benjamin's-son—was a repulsive-looking old fellow.
The blurb, the gist, the why of the day and the work itself are in the app. The first button needs it on this device; the second gets it there.
