A French diplomat sent a questionnaire to Virginia's governor, and Jefferson answered it with an entire country: rivers measured by the navigable mile, the Natural Bridge he owned but could not look down from without a violent headache, a moose shipped to Paris to prove to Buffon that nothing on this continent had degenerated into smallness. For query after query it is the loveliest kind of catalogue, a mind weighing everything within its reach.

It is error alone which needs the support of government. Truth can stand by itself.
