Two coconut palms grow in a hidden valley on the Île de France, one planted on the morning each child was born, their crowns leaning together above the huts of two Frenchwomen who came to the island ruined and raised their children as brother and sister. Paul and Virginia know no world outside that basin.

I have only known misfortune by wandering from virtue.
