Under the white blaze of Mercury's Sunside, a robot named Speedy reels in a great circle around a pool of selenium, lurching like a drunk and warbling Gilbert and Sullivan into his handlers' earphones. Two engineers, roasting as their heat shields fail, cannot understand why the machine will not simply come home.

A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
