The ice takes the ship slowly, and that is the horror of it: for months the Endurance is held fast in the Weddell Sea, groaning as the floes close on her, until her sides give way and she is drawn down. Shackleton , who stood on the floe and watched, reports the whole catastrophe in the flat courteous prose of a man filing a return.

A man must shape himself to a new mark directly the old one goes to ground.
