It begins on an English hillside after a quarrel, with nothing more remarkable than the lit windows of home below and the stars overhead. Then the watcher is lifted out of his body and out of his century, and Star Maker opens into the largest story anyone has attempted: a world whose people know one another by taste, a race of fishes and a race of spiders who grow into one civilisation, plant-folk who root all day to drink the sun, whole galaxies waking into a single mind.

I perceived that I was on a little round grain of rock and metal, filmed with water and with air, whirling in sunlight and darkness.

The blurb, the gist, the why of the day and the work itself are in the app. The first button needs it on this device; the second gets it there.
