The meeting house at Waituhi is full of weeping, and at its centre, beneath the carved faces of the ancestors, lies Rongo Mahana. His eldest son Tama has come home from a desk job in Wellington to sit beside the body through the days of the tangi, while the old women keen and the speakers rise one after another to send the dead man on his way.

Before Dad bought the farm at Waituhi we lived in a small wooden house on the other side of this town.
