Time, she begins, is a river that bears all things off and plunges them into the dark, and she has taken up her pen to haul one man back out of it: her father. Anna Komnene wrote her account of the emperor Alexios in an archaic Greek borrowed from Homer and Thucydides, from a convent, an old woman shut away after a failed attempt on her brother's throne.

I, Anna, the daughter of two royal personages, Alexius and Irene, born and bred in the purple.
