Steerage on the Devonia smelled of bilge and unwashed bodies, and somewhere in the dark a fiddle was going and people danced who had nothing to dance about. Stevenson was aboard because word had come from California that Fanny Osbourne was ill, and he crossed the Atlantic and then the continent among emigrants, sick and half starved, taking notes.

It is not by a man's purse, but by his character, that he is rich or poor.
