Under a shuttered window in a Seville street, a nobleman waits in a brown cloak for a girl to appear, and the man who strolls up with a guitar round his neck, composing a drinking song, is the only person in Spain who can help him. Figaro has been a poet, an apothecary, a veterinary surgeon and now a barber, and he explains himself in a line that has outlived his century: he hurries to laugh at everything, for fear of being obliged to weep.

a slight rumor, skimming the ground like the swallow before the storm, pianissimo, it murmurs, and twists and leaves behind it its poisonous trail.
