A demolition order arrives in a neighborhood the government has named, without hearing itself, Eden District, Happiness Precinct: a huddle of shanties in 1970s Seoul that a dwarf and his children raised with their own hands and now have days to abandon. Cho Se-hui tells their unmaking in short, flat, dreamlike sentences that pass from mouth to mouth across a cycle of linked stories, the voice never rising even as a family is fed into the machinery of a country getting rich.

People called Father a dwarf. Their perception was correct. Father was a dwarf. Sad to say, that was their only correct perception of Father.
