Frits van Egters is twenty-three, and his job is to take cards out of a file and put them back again. The ten evenings this novel counts down, the last of a dead December, are worse: home with his parents, whose every chewed mouthful and misremembered word he catalogues with appalling precision, he fills the dark hours telling ghoulish jokes about baldness and picking at the boredom like a scab.
I take cards out of a file. Once I have taken them out, I put them back in again. That is it.
The blurb, the gist, the why of the day and the work itself are in the app. The first button needs it on this device; the second gets it there.
