An old tiger stands on a riverbank holding out a gold bracelet, promising a traveller he has given up killing, and the man wades in for it and sinks to his chest in mud, where the tiger takes him at leisure. That is the first thing the pandit Vishnu Sharma teaches a king's unteachable sons, and it sets the temper of everything after: the world is full of soft voices with an appetite behind them.

This unwelcome visit happeneth to day very early, and I know not what may be the consequence.
