A crane comes in from Ireland against the wind and drops exhausted on the shore of Iona. Columba has told a monk to wait for it, to lift it from the sand and keep it warm and fed for three days and nights until it can turn for home: a guest, he says, from the land of our fathers.

I and that beast are under the power of God.
