Three thousand longhorns and a dozen young men leave the Rio Grande in the spring and walk north for five months, and the whole book is that walk. Andy Adams had done it himself, and he wrote this out of plain irritation at the shooting-gallery cowboys of the dime novels, so what you get instead is the work: night herding in relays, the songs sung to hold a herd quiet, quicksand at the river crossings, dust on cattle that have not drunk in three days.

Just why my father moved, at the close of the civil war, from Georgia to Texas, is to this good hour a mystery to me.
