'That child,' says an aunt in the book's first line, looking at her with indigo-colored eyes, 'is possessed.' Cassandra Morgeson is ten, and the judgment sticks: through a New England shipping town, through the households she is sent away to, through a hunger nobody around her has a word for except sin. Stoddard wrote a heroine who wants things, food, sea air, the wrong man, her own life, and refused to punish her for it the way the century expected.

Its walls are no longer standing, and the hands of its builders have crumbled to dust.
