Wind comes up the Sierra in December, and Muir climbs a hundred feet into the top of a Douglas spruce to be in it, clinging there for hours while the whole forest bends and roars around him like surf. That is the temperament behind this book: someone who went into the mountains not to describe them but to be inside their weather.
the Sierra should be called not the Nevada, or Snowy Range, but the Range of Light.
