A child and her ruined grandfather flee London on foot, hunted by the dwarf moneylender who has taken their shop, and drift through fairs, waxworks and factory towns until she sickens in a village churchyard and dies there.

She was dead. No sleep so beautiful and calm, so free from trace of pain, so fair to look upon.
