Billy Buck knows horses better than any man on the Salinas ranch, so when he tells Jody the weather will hold and the red pony can stay out in the corral, the boy believes him. It rains, and the next days come at their full length: the swelling throat, the hole Billy cuts in the windpipe with his pocketknife, the pony gone into the fog, and Jody killing a buzzard with his bare hands while it watches him without fear.

It was a whole bunch of people made into one big crawling beast.
