Behind the walls of a convent school in West Flanders, a few boys swear themselves into a secret brotherhood called the Apostles and wait for the war the nuns can feel coming. Louis Seynaeve is sly and greedy for stories, and Hugo Claus follows him out of the dormitory and home to a family that drifts, one small compromise at a time, toward the occupiers.

We’re not Belgians, Constance, we are Flemings, we belong to a fraternal Germanic people.
