Two woodcutters trudging home through the snow find a child wrapped in a golden cloak where a star has just come down, and the poorer of them carries it back to a hut with too many mouths in it. The boy grows into the most beautiful thing in the forest and the cruellest, pelting beggars with stones, pitiless toward every small living thing that cannot answer back.

Yet did his beauty work him evil. For he grew proud, and cruel, and selfish.
