Lov Bensey comes up the sand road with a sack of turnips, and by the time he reaches the Lester place the whole starving family has fixed on it the way dogs fix on meat. What happens next in that dooryard is the funniest scene Erskine Caldwell ever wrote and the most shaming, because those turnips are the only food anyone here will see.
