About the book

A British lord and lady are marooned on the African coast and die in a thatched cabin by the shore, leaving an infant son who is carried away by the great ape Kala and raised among the tribe of Kerchak. Edgar Rice Burroughs first serialised this novel in All-Story Magazine in 1912, working from a Chicago pencil-sharpener office at thirty-six and inventing a frontier his own life had refused him. John Clayton II grows into a creature stranger than either world, teaching himself to read from his dead father's books before he has heard a human voice. The arrival of Jane Porter forces a reckoning between two inheritances, the simian and the civilised. The jungle keeps what it raises, and the man it raised never quite leaves it.
