About the book
A poor woodcarver named Geppetto whittles a puppet from a piece of pine that already speaks before the first leg is finished, and the puppet runs out the door before he can be taught to walk. Carlo Collodi serialised these adventures in a Roman children's paper from 1881, publishing them as a book in 1883, and Italy gained the children's classic against which all subsequent ones would measure. Pinocchio meets the Fox and the Cat, swallows gold pieces meant for his father, lies until his nose grows, donkeys himself in the Land of Toys, and is finally swallowed by a great fish. Beneath the comedy runs the older logic of fable: every transgression has its body. The wood remembers what the boy will not.
