About the book
A man in a dressing gown bends over a chemical retort in lamp-lit rooms above Baker Street, then turns and tells a stranger he can see he has been in Afghanistan. Arthur Conan Doyle, an Edinburgh physician modeling his detective on the surgeon Joseph Bell, opened the cycle in 1887 and closed it forty years later in this 1927 omnibus. The four novels (A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Valley of Fear) frame fifty-six stories serialized in The Strand, where queues formed for each new issue. Holmes plunges with Moriarty over the Reichenbach Falls and returns; Watson narrates; the fog never quite lifts from London. The detective story begins here and has not stopped beginning.
