About the book
"Very early morning. The sun was not yet risen, and the whole of Crescent Bay was hidden under a white sea-mist." Out of that mist comes a shepherd with his flock, and behind him a whole New Zealand summer day, which Katherine Mansfield follows from dawn to moonrise in the company of the Burnell family from Prelude. Stanley charges down for his morning swim and is outraged to find someone in the water before him. The servant girl dresses up for an afternoon at the village store. In the quiet after lunch, little Kezia begs her grandmother to promise never to die, and the old woman cannot quite promise. Under a manuka tree, Linda Burnell looks at her baby son and admits that she does not love him, a confession that still startles. Mansfield wrote it far from home and gravely ill, and every voice and wave is held as if she knew how easily they slip away. Then night comes, a small cloud crosses the moon, and the sea sounds deep and troubled before it murmurs back to stillness.
