About the book
A masked figure haunts the cellars of the Paris Opera, lowering chandeliers, leaving threatening letters in box five, and sending love poems to a young Swedish soprano named Christine Daaé. Gaston Leroux published this gothic romance in serial across 1909 and 1910, framing it as a journalist's investigation into rumours that had circulated through the Palais Garnier since its opening. Erik, the disfigured genius beneath the building, has built an underground lake, a torture chamber, and an organ of his own design. He kidnaps Christine for one night and returns her, then asks her to choose: marry him, or watch the opera house burn. The chandelier falls, the cellars fill with water, and the music keeps playing above.
