About the book

D'Artagnan is forty and still a lieutenant. Twenty years of service, the same rank, the same rented room, and the three men he would once have died for have gone their separate ways and stopped writing. Then Mazarin needs somebody dangerous, and he goes out to find them. What he finds is the real subject of the book. Athos has a son and a conscience, Aramis has a bishopric and a mistress, Porthos has an estate and wants a title, and two of the four are on the wrong side of a civil war from the other two. Dumas takes them off the barricades of the Fronde and across the Channel into a much colder story, where they try to save a king who is not certain he wants saving, and where the son of a woman they killed twenty years ago is hunting them one at a time. The swords are as quick as they ever were. The men holding them are not.
