Heidi came out in two parts, in 1880 and 1881, and has hardly been out of print since. It begins on a hot June morning, when a little girl in two dresses and a red shawl is marched up the mountain above Mayenfeld by an aunt with a new place to go to, and left with a grandfather who lives at enmity with God and man. What follows is a book about where a child belongs: the hayloft, the goats, the blind grandmother in the hut below, and the long way from all of them to a grand house in Frankfurt. Twenty-three chapters, one a day, from Spyri's birthday.
