Ovid set out to tell of forms changed into new bodies, from the first shaping of the world down to his own day, and the Metamorphoses does exactly that in fifteen Books. The stories run into one another: a god falls in love, a girl runs, a hunter strays into the wrong clearing, and someone ends the tale as a tree, a spring, a bird or a stone. Painters, poets and Shakespeare have been borrowing from it ever since. Here it is in Henry T. Riley's prose, one Book a day for fifteen days.
