The Time Machine was H. G. Wells's first novel, published in 1895, and it made the machine for travelling in time one of the great ideas of fiction. It begins at a dinner table in Richmond, where a scientist known only as the Time Traveller tells his guests that time is a fourth dimension, and shows them a little model that vanishes from the table in front of them. A week later he comes in late to his own dinner, dusty and limping, and begins to tell them where he has been. Seventeen chapters, one a day, beginning on Wells's birthday.
