Treasure Island began with a map. In the late summer of 1881, at a cottage in the Highlands, a map of an imaginary island was drawn to amuse Stevenson's stepson, and the story came out of it a chapter at a time. Jim Hawkins, a boy from a seaside inn, finds a dead pirate's papers in a sea-chest and sails from Bristol with a squire, a doctor and a one-legged ship's cook in search of Flint's buried gold. Much of what we picture when we picture pirates comes from this book. Thirty-four short chapters, one a day from the first of August.
