In 1900 a Chicago writer, L. Frank Baum, and the artist W. W. Denslow brought out what Baum called a modernized fairy tale. It begins on a grey Kansas farm, with an orphan girl, her little black dog and a cyclone, and it goes somewhere very bright: a country of Munchkins and witches, a road paved with yellow brick, and three companions who each believe the Wizard at the end of it can give them what they lack. The book is odder, funnier and sometimes fiercer than the film. Twenty-five days, Baum's introduction and then a chapter a day, from the day the first copy was printed.
