A young woman refuses a shepherd's proposal, then inherits a farm and hires him when his flock dies. She sends an idle valentine to a lonely farmer and marries a soldier, and the joke ruins both men before she returns to the shepherd.

It is difficult for a woman to define her feelings in language which is chiefly made by men to express theirs.
