An old pond, a frog, the sound of water: seventeen syllables that have outlasted empires, and the whole of Japanese poetry seems to turn on that small splash. Basho spent his last decade walking the back roads of the north, sleeping in fishermen's huts and temple lofts, because he believed a poem could only be found where it happened.

The old pond, aye! and the sound of a frog leaping into the water.
