A family in Le Havre learns that a dead friend has left his whole fortune to the younger son. The elder, a doctor, works out that his brother is another man's child, forces his mother to admit it, and takes a ship's post to get away.

It was as a poison flowing in his veins and giving him an impulse to bite like a mad dog.
