In December 1945 an Egyptian farmer digging for fertiliser near Nag Hammadi struck a sealed jar and hesitated before breaking it, half afraid a spirit was corked inside. Out came thirteen leather-bound codices that had lain in the sand since the fourth century, when books like these were being hunted and burned.

Many gnostics, on the contrary, insisted that ignorance, not sin, is what involves a person in suffering.
