Portland is a rock of white stone tied to Dorset by a bar of shingle, and the families who quarry it have been marrying each other for centuries. Jocelyn Pierston leaves it for London and a sculptor's name, and carries away not the trade but a haunting: the Well-Beloved, a spirit of ideal loveliness that will not stay in one woman's body, that slips from a face he has worshipped to a stranger's across a room without asking his leave.

The Juno of that day was the Witch of Endor of this.
