A novelist sits in a small Paris apartment, drinking coffee through the night and trying to bind ninety novels into a single architecture of a country and a century. Honoré de Balzac began this vast cycle around 1830 and worked at it until his death in 1850, naming it after Dante and arranging it into Studies of Manners, of Philosophy, and of Analysis.
